How to Make a Scarecrow from a Plastic Container
Looking for a quick and easy fall DIY project to brighten your home? This DIY scarecrow from a recycled container is the perfect way to upcycle everyday items into charming fall décor. With just a plastic container, a little paint, burlap, and raffia, you can create an adorable handmade scarecrow that’s budget-friendly and fun for the whole family. Whether you’re going for rustic farmhouse fall decorating ideas or simply want a festive centerpiece for your autumn home, this upcycled scarecrow tutorial will inspire you to craft something cozy and creative.
Supplies Needed:
Large plastic container or a 32 oz vegetable can
Acrylic paint (cream, black, white, and accent colors)
Small wooden triangle or orange felt (for the nose)
Burlap
Florist foam
Fall embellishments (leaves, flowers, raffia, etc.)
Jute twine rope
Fabric scrap (for the bandana scarf)
White and black waterproof pens
Hot glue gun & glue sticks
Step One: Paint the Container
Start by painting your container with 2–3 coats of cream acrylic paint. Allow each layer to dry before adding the next. This will give your scarecrow a nice, solid base.
Step Two: Create the Face
Print or draw a simple scarecrow face. Transfer the image to the container using the old-school transfer method, or freehand if you prefer. You can also use sulfite paper to make a transfer.
Paint the eyes with black paint (you may need 2–3 coats). Once dry, outline with a waterproof pen and add highlights with a white pen for character. Attach or paint on the nose, then add a big cheerful smile!
Step Three: Make the Hat
Cut a small piece of florist foam (about 2 ½” x 3”).
Cut a 17–18” circle from burlap.
Place the foam in the center and gather the burlap around it.
Tie the base tightly with jute rope to form the hat.
Step Four: Add Hair
Hot glue clumps of raffia to each side of the scarecrow’s head. For a fuller look, add some to the back, or even create “bangs” by gluing raffia to the front.
Step Five: Assemble the Hat & Embellishments
Glue the burlap hat on top of the raffia hair. Then add fall embellishments—like leaves, raffia bows, or small flowers—to the hat for extra charm.
Step Six: Finish with a Scarf
Cut a strip of fabric and glue it around the base of the container to create a simple bandana scarf. This finishing touch makes your scarecrow look extra cozy and ready for autumn!
