How to Make Your Own Snow Texture Paste

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably searched Pinterest for a good homemade Snow Texture Paste recipe. There are so many versions out there, but I wanted something simple, affordable, and easy to make with items you already have on hand — or can grab from Dollar Tree.

The Basic Recipe I Started With

One of the first recipes I found called for:

  • ½ part white paint

  • ½ part baking soda

  • A little bit of white glue

  • Glitter - Optional

  • Mix until blended

This was a great starting point, but once I began experimenting, I found that I needed to adjust the measurements to get the thick, fluffy paste I was looking for.

What Worked Best for Me

I began with 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of white paint, just like the original recipe suggested. But to get that perfect thick “snowy” texture, I ended up adding:

  • About ¼ cup of baking soda

  • More white glue than expected

The goal is to create a thick, spreadable paste.

Tips for Getting the Best Snowy Effect

If you’ve ever used Snow Texture paste, you know it can be a little stiff and crumbly. This homemade version behaves the same way, which means:

    • It spreads best with a plastic palette knife or your fingers

    • It dries out quickly, so only make a small batch

    • Work somewhat quickly once it’s mixed

    • If your paste begins to dry out, add a few drops of water and mix well

I used this recipe to embellish my Gingerbread House Banner, and it worked beautifully!

Gingerbread House Banner Printable

Want to try this technique for yourself? I created a Gingerbread House Garland printable you can download and decorate with your homemade Snow Texture Paste.

You’ll receive:

  • A small gingerbread house design (approx. 4 ½” x 5”)

  • A larger version (approx. 6” x 6”)

  • Written Instructions

  • Candy Cutout (I actually cut my candy cutouts on my Cricut)

Both are perfect for adding “snow” along rooftops, chimneys, windowsills, and more.

This DIY Snow Texture Paste gave me the exact snowy look I wanted.

I think you’ll love how easy (and budget-friendly) it is to make your own snow texture paste.
