Just Keeping Praying - Ephesians

Last week, I watched Finding Nemo with my granddaughter — a sweet time full of giggles and popcorn crumbs. If you’ve seen the movie, you probably remember Dory, the forgetful but determined blue tang fish who keeps repeating her famous line: “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming…”

That simple little phrase stuck with me, and as I sat down to reflect on Ephesians 6:18, it surfaced again — this time with a gentle nudge from the Holy Spirit: Just keep praying.

Paul’s instruction to the Ephesians follows his description of the Armor of God — after we’ve put on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, and the sword of the Spirit, he ends with something equally essential: prayer. But not just once-in-a-while prayer. Paul says to “keep on praying.”

It’s so easy to grow weary in prayer. Sometimes it feels like we’re whispering into the void. Other times, we don’t even have the words. But Scripture calls us to persevere. Not because God needs constant reminding, but because we need constant re-centering. Every time we come to God in prayer — whether with joy, sorrow, frustration, or praise — we realign our hearts with His.

“Keep on praying” is a call to relationship. It’s the spiritual rhythm that brings us back into God's presence, again and again. Just like Dory’s cheerful determination to keep going, we’re invited to persist in prayer — through every high and low, in every season.

You don’t have to pray perfect words. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to show up.

So when you’re tired, distracted, discouraged, or feeling distant from God — pause, breathe, and whisper a prayer. One sentence is enough. One moment of stillness can reconnect your heart with His.

Just keep praying, sweet friend. He’s listening.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What usually keeps me from praying consistently?

  2. What does “keeping on in prayer” look like in my daily life?

  3. How have I experienced God’s presence when I’ve chosen to pray—even in small ways?

Closing Prayer:

Father, thank You for always listening. Teach me to keep coming back to You — in the busy moments, the quiet ones, and even the hard ones. Stir in me a spirit that is persistent and faithful in prayer. Remind me that even when I feel weak or distracted, Your presence is just a whisper away. Help me to just keep praying. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
