A Life Filled with Song - Scripture Challenge - Ephesians 5:19
There’s something sacred about music—it has a way of reaching places that spoken words simply can’t. Whether you’re playing the piano, singing in the car, or leading a congregation in worship, music has a powerful way of connecting our hearts to God and encouraging those around us.
Ephesians 5:19 isn’t just a suggestion—it’s a way of life. It reminds us that worship isn't confined to Sunday morning services. It's meant to fill our homes, our hearts, and even our conversations. “Speak to one another” with songs—it’s fellowship through melody, encouragement through harmony, and truth carried on a tune.
For me, music has often been my first language in prayer—especially when words are too heavy to form.
I remember when my brother was just 38 years old (he’s now 70), he had a massive stroke. We didn’t know if he would live or die—or what shape he’d be in if he survived. Having three young kids at home and his family living several hours away, I couldn’t just drop everything to be with him. When I got the news, I didn’t even know how to pray. My heart was overwhelmed. So, I sat at the piano and just played. I cried out to God with every note, letting the music speak the prayers I couldn’t put into words.
My daughter, who was about four years old at the time, quietly drew a picture of me crying at the piano. I still have that drawing. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest moments, when our hearts break open, God is still good—and He is near.
That’s what it means to make music from your heart to the Lord. It’s not always joyful and polished—sometimes it’s raw, tear-stained, and aching. But it’s still worship. And He receives it.
And whether it’s an ancient hymn, a Psalm set to music, or a spontaneous song whispered to the Lord—each one is precious.
Because what matters most isn’t the style—it’s the heart behind it.
