Bow the Knee
Trusting God When the Future Feels Uncertain
There are certain songs that seem to meet you right where you are — songs that carry you through fear, waiting, and uncertainty. For me, one of those songs is “Bow the Knee” by Chris Machen.
My husband is about to retire, and while I’m genuinely excited for him, I’ll be honest — I’m scared for myself. He’s over 65, so insurance isn’t a problem for him since he’ll be on Medicare. But I’m not quite there yet, which means that for the next year and a half, I either go without insurance or try to find one that I can possibly afford — and pray that nothing serious happens with my health.
On top of that, my church job feels uncertain. Each paycheck seems to come with a question mark. Do I need to find a full-time job? What will this next season look like? The future, to me, feels scary and unknown.
And yet, in the middle of my worries, the words of “Bow the Knee” echo in my heart:
“Trust the heart of your Father when the answer goes beyond what you can see.
Lift your eyes toward heaven and believe the One who holds eternity.
And when you don’t understand the purpose of His plan,
In the presence of the King, bow the knee.”
Those lyrics remind me that I don’t have to have all the answers. My job isn’t to see the full picture — it’s to trust the One who does.
The Bible is full of moments where God’s people had to “bow the knee” — to surrender their control, their understanding, and their plans to Him. Philippians 2:10–11 says, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord.”
Bowing the knee is a symbol of surrender, humility, and worship. It’s not giving up — it’s giving over our fears to the One who already holds tomorrow.
So today, as I face this season of change, I’m learning to bow the knee — not in defeat, but in faith. To lay my worries before the Lord, to trust His heart even when I can’t see His hand, and to rest in the truth that He’s still writing my story.
If you’re walking through your own uncertain season, I hope this encourages you to do the same. You don’t have to understand every detail — you just have to trust the One who holds eternity.
In His presence, we find peace. In His plan, we find purpose. And when we don’t understand, we bow the knee.
