How to Make a Flip Flop Wooden Door Hanger (Wreath Style!)
I just love how this Flip Flop wreath turned out—it’s bright, whimsical, and the perfect way to welcome summer with a smile! ☀️ When I first picked up the flip flops from Dollar Tree, I wasn’t totally in love with the colors, but they were all that was available. I brought them home anyway, knowing that a little creativity and some coordinating paint could totally transform them.
And wow, I’m so glad I did! Once I started putting everything together, this door hanger quickly became one of my favorite summer projects.
Supplies:
5 pairs of flip flops (Dollar Tree or similar)
1 small wooden round (8”-10”)
1 large wooden round (14”-18”)
E6000 glue
Hot glue gun & glue sticks
Acrylic paint (to coordinate with your flip flops)
Ribbon or fabric for the bowBlack Sharpie marker (optional for detail)
Jute twine or wire (for hanging)
Drill (for adding hanger holes)
Instructions:
Step 1:
Start with the large round wooden base. I used a seasonal sign from Dollar Tree and painted the back with gesso to prime the surface.
Step 2:
Paint the large round black (or any dark color) so it blends into the background. This helps keep the focus on the colorful flip flops.
💡 TIP: If you're using a wire wreath form, be warned—flip flops may sag by summer’s end! Add large popsicle sticks to the backs of each flip flop for extra support.
Step 3:
Trim about 1½ inches off the bottom of each flip flop and snip a triangle off each side so they nest neatly around the round base. Once you’ve arranged them to your liking, glue them down with E6000 (for durability outdoors) and hot glue (for instant hold).
Step 4:
Paint your smaller center round. You can get creative here—solid, stripes, polka dots, or even a beach ball theme like I did! Choose colors that complement your flip flops.
Step 5:
Glue the painted center round onto the flip flops using E6000 and hot glue. Let it dry thoroughly.
Step 6:
Make a cheerful bow using ribbon, lace, or even torn fabric strips. This adds a soft, fun finish to your hanger.
Step 7:
Attach the bow with glue to the top or side of your design.
Step 8:
Drill two small holes in the top of the back round and thread through jute twine or wire to create your hanger.
Step 9:
Hang up your Flip Flop Wreath and admire your sunshine-ready creation!
This Flip Flop Wooden Door Hanger is not only budget-friendly—it’s a fun way to personalize your summer decor with bright colors and playful charm. Whether you’re making one for your own porch or giving it as a gift, it’s sure to make people smile. Remember, sometimes the best projects come from unexpected materials and a little imagination. So grab those flip flops, your glue gun, and let’s get crafty!
